Biography contributed by Modbury High School

Alick Harold Barreau was born in Semaphore on the 13th of April 1884. His mother's name was Marian Jane Barreau. Prior to the war, he worked as a ‘Stevedore’, loading and unloading ships. Alick was un-wed and single prior to the war, enlisting on the 11th of January 1915 in Ceduna SA at the age of 30 years.

Alick embarked on the HMAT A30 Borda on the 23rd of June 1915 travelling from Adelaide and arriving in Gallipoli shortly thereafter. Later in that year, on the 29th of September 1915 he joined the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 6th reinforcement. He participated in numerous battles, including (but not limited to) the Battles of Gaza (circa 1917), the battle of Romani (circa 1916) and the battle of the Es Salt Raid (circa 1918). All of these battles were largely unsuccessful, costing many Australian lives.

Alick was awarded 3 service awards throughout his career, being the 1914/15 Star, the ‘British War Medal’, and the ‘Victory Medal’.

In 1917, Alick required admission to the hospital with Pleurisy for several weeks.

Alick served four years in the armed forces achieving the rank of Lance Corporal before ultimately returning to Australia on 15th May 1919.

Alick Harold Barreau died on the 16th of February 1964, at the age of 79 in Daw Park. He is buried in Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia, RSL Wall 114, Niche F012.
