Roy was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1892, the fifth of eight children of Joseph Henry Champion (b1861 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Annie Matilda Callow (b1862 in Ballarat, Victoria). Joseph (a Compositor) and Annie married in 1896 in Ballarat Victoria, where they settled and raised their family before moving to Bedfordale, Armadale WA. Joseph was an Orchardist, growing oranges and stone fruit.
In 1915 Roy was an Orchardist in Bedfordale, Armadale WA when he enlisted in the AIF (Private: Service No:1753). He served in Egypt with 10th Light Horse Regiment as a Trooper and was attached to Australian Mounted Divisional Train as a Driver when he was Discharged in September 1919. Brother Stanley (Private; Service No:2161) was KiA at Pozieres in 1916.
In July 1915 Roy married Hope Olive Ray (b1895 in Pinjarra WA) and following his Discharge, Roy and Hope settled in Bedfordale, Armadale WA where Roy was an Orchardist. By 1931 he and Hope had moved into Armadale where Roy worked as a Labourer. He died in Armadale WA in 1945 and Hope died in 1987.
