Son of James Owen and Amy Elizabeth Owen nee Todd of Vine Street, Windsor, Victoria.

Brother of William Mackie Owen who returned to Australia on 8 June 1919 having served with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade.

Commenced return to Australia on 24 January 1918 aboard HS Dunluce Castel then transhipped at Cape Town on 16 February 1918 to HS Karoola disembarking on 10 March 1918
