Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Allen Edwin Ballinger was born in 1881, at Coleford, Gloucestershire England.

Allen was a grocer and in December 1905, emigrated from UK and travelled to Wellington New Zealand.

In 1911, Allen married Olive Cleveland Lawson in New Zealand. The following year 1912, a daughter was born in New Zealand, and during December 1913 Allen's only son, Arthur was born in Australia.

Allen enlisted for the war on 9 March 1915 and was posted to the 19th Battalion. He arrived on Gallipoli on 15 August 1915.

A week prior to arriving his brother, 2108 Private Arthur Percival Ballinger 3rd Battalion AIF, had been severely wounded, shot in the chest, during the Battle of Lone Pine. Arthur was invalided to Australia and died in hospital 18 months later, probably due to his wounds.

Allen Ballinger survived Gallipoli but during the Battle of Pozieres in 1916, he was admitted to the 44th Casualty Clearing Station in a critical condition caused by gas shells. He died of his wounds the same day.

Allen's wife Olive placed a “In Memoriam” in the paper, which read: BALLINGER - In loving memory of Pte. Allen Edwin Ballinger, 19th Batt, died of wounds July 27, 1916, at Posieres Inserted by his loving wife Olive, and children Arthur and Olive, Ourimbah, N.S.W.

The Ballinger brothers were the sons of Richard and Emily Ballinger of Folley House, Coleford, Gloucestershire, England.
