Youngest of three brothers to serve in WWI, Corporal Archibald Inglis Hitchin (Service No:1956) enlisted in the AIF on 11 January 1915 as a Private with 10th Battalion. Private Hitchin was attached to 50th Infantry Battalion on 20 April 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Gallipoli on board HMAT A20 Hororata. On 5 June 1916, Private Hitchin embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, and was WiA in France on 25 June 1916 - GSW arm. Promoted to Corporal on 16 January 1917, he embarked from London for Adelaide on 8 April 1919 on board HT Tresos Montes, and was Discharged on 19 July 1919. In WWII, he served as a Signaller (Service No:S52649) with 4 Lines of Communication Signals (PMG) from 22 May 1942 to 14 January 1945 (Part Time Duty).
Arch was born in Edwardstown, South Australia in 1891, eighth of ten children of William Hitchin (b1850 in Goodwood, South Australia) and Jane Elizabeth Inglis (b1853 in London, England) - Jane arrived in Port Adelaide with her family and siblings in 1855 on board the Caroline. William worked as a Labourer in Goodwood, and he and Jane married in 1874 in Hindmarsh, where they lived until 1884 when they moved to Edwardstown - where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. In the late 1890s they moved to Hindmarsh, where William worked as a Wool Scourer for Messrs GH Mitchell & Sons.
Arch was working as a Wool Classer in Hindmarsh in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge, in 1920 in Adelaide married Madeline McDonald (nee Pridmore; b1899 in Adelaide, South Australia). Arch and Madeline lived in Adelaide and Mannum, where they raised their family and Arch worked as a Fuel Merchant before joining the Postmaster Genaral's Department in the early 1920s as a Linesman, retiring as Foreman (Senior Linesman) in 1952. Arch died in 1977 and Madeline in 1985.
