Ernest Colin Johncock
Military Service
Although his civilian occupation was reserved, Ernest voluntarily enlisted for service during the Second World War. His attestation and service records provide the following details:
Enlistment Date: 9 February 1942
Enlistment Place: Glenelg, South Australia
Service Number: S47650
Unit: Signals (SA L of C Sigs)
Rank: Signalman (Sig)
Medical Classification: Class I
Distinctive Mark: Scar on right jaw
Religion: Methodist
His initial medical examination took place on 18 December 1941 at Prospect, where he was temporarily classed unfit for Class I due to bronchitis (recorded as 2/52), but he recovered and was cleared for service.
Ernest was married with two children at the time of enlistment. His wife, Mary Johncock (née Campbell), was recorded as next of kin, residing at 183 Archer Street, North Adelaide. His home address was later listed as 23 Alma Street, Glenelg.
Ernest undertook part-time home training duty (six days per year) beginning September 1942. His duties involved communication and signalling support rather than front-line combat, in line with his civilian expertise. On 19 January 1945, he was transferred to the Reserve, ending his active part-time service.
