98 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 24th May 1922, Sapper Colin Thompson, (also known as Scalo), 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company, miner from 42 Railway Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and Rhondda, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 38. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 16 NE. 16.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales about 1884 to Francis and Mary Thompson; husband of ?, Colin enlisted May 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 13.8.1917 (emphysema and chronic bronchitis – incorrectly reported as shell shock - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138747258), Colin returned home January 1918 and was medically discharged February 1918 suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.

His name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor.
