Private Hughie Leahy (Service No:S20127) served in the ACMF as a Private attached to 27 Battalion from 8 August 1940 to 30 March 1941 - Discharged Medically Unfit. Half siblings Matthew (aka John), Arthur, Claude (aka Mick) and Owen (aka George) served in WWI.
Hughie was born in Mt Gambier, South Australia in 1915, second of three children of George Francis Lehey (b1859 in Monmouthshire, Wales) and his second wife Elizabeth Lavinia Greenhill (b1887 in Mt Gambier, South Australia). George immigrated in 1860, arriving in Port Adelaide with his parents and siblings on board the Schah Jehan. He was a Widower, working as a Tailor in 1913 when he and Elizabeth married in Mt Gambier, where they raised their family before moving to Adelaide.
Hughie worked as a Salesman in Adelaide before enlisting in the Army. In the 1950s Hughie married Muriel Yvonne McNamara (nee Hewton; b1911 in Pimbaacla, South Australia). Hughie died in 2005 and Muriel in 2009.
