Private Kevin William Bates (Service No:S112945) enlisted in the ACMF on 21 April 1941 and was attached to Nos 3 and 19 Infantry Training Battalions, 101 Brigade Support Coy and 29 Works Coy. Private Bates was attached to 19 Works Coy at Discharge on 18 April 1946.

Bill was born in 1921 in Adelaide, South Australia to William (Bill) Henry Bates (b1892 in Northumberland, England) and Bridget Theresa Cecilia Weathers (b1886 in Penfield, South Australia). Bill Snr immigrated in 1913, arriving in Adelaide SA on board the Wilcannia, and served in WWI (Private; Service No:16754). Bill Snr (a Cleaner with SA Railways) and Bridget married in  1920 in Adelaide and, following Bridget's death in 1934, Bill Snr remarried in 1938 to Mary Frances Naulty (b1897 at Port Pire, South Australia).

Bill was a Process Worker with SA Railways when he enlisted in the ACMF, and in 1943 in Adelaide, Bill married  Viola Doreen Roberts (b1923 at Malalla, South Australia). Bill later remarried to Thelma Spence Keane (nee Brown; b1921 at Kadina, South Australia. Bill died in 1990 and Thelma in 2001.
