Private Lawrence Lott (Service No:2498) enlisted in the AIF on 12 July 1915, and was attached to 2nd Field Company Engineers when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney, NSW for England on board RSM Mooltan on 11 December 1915. Private Lott served as a Driver, Gunner and Shoeing Smith on the Western Front with 5th and 12th Field Artillery Brigades. He embarked from London for Melbourne on 8 May 1919 on board HT Devanha, and was attached to 12th Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 23 August 1919.
Laurence Leonard Lott was born in Branxholme, Victoria in 1880, seventh of eight children of Francis David Lott (b1850 in Surrey, England) and Elizabeth Ward (b1850 in Cornwall, England). Francis immigrated in 1853 with his parents, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Eliza, and Elizabeth immigrated in 1863 with her parents and siblings, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Merrie Monarch. Franis (a Bootmaker) and Elizabeth married in 1872 in Melbourne, before settling in Branxholme where they raised their family and Francis, in 1877, was contracted to provide Prisoners' rations. In the early 1900s the family moved to Melbourne, where Francis was a Bootmaker and Billiard Room Licensee.
Laurence worked as a Farrier/Blacksmith in Melbourne where, in 1914, he married Edith de Montford Townsing (b1891 in Ampitheatre, Victoria) - Edith was working as a Domestic Servant in Melbourne. Laurence enlisted in the AIF and Edith returned to Ampitheatre to live with her parents whilst Laurence was overseas. Following his Discharge in 1919, Laurence divorced Edith, who later remarried. Laurence settled in Melbourne, where he worked as a Farrier/Blacksmith until his death in 1926.
