A tragic end for a WW1 Hero who served and suffered during The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
101 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 13th May 1921, Lance Corporal William George Chisholm, 2nd Australian Division Signals Company (Reg No-1038), clerk and coal trimmer from Windermere Cottage, Cessnock, New South Wales and Anderton Street, Islington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 34. ANGLICAN 1-10. 121.
Born at Muttama, New South Wales on the 2nd April 1887 to Daniel William and Caroline Chisholm; husband of Isabella (Isabel) Fletcher Chisholm nee Laing (married 1909, Cessnock, N.S.W., died?), William enlisted January 1915 with the 20th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 18.6.1917 (not stated), 3.2.1919 (influenza).
William returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 3rd September 1919.
Mr. Chisholm’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial (photos courtesy of David Harrower).
The tragic circumstances of William’s death were reported. He fell into the hold of the Commonwealth
steamer Enoggera.
There is no indication inscribed on Mr. Chisholm’s headstone plaque of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.
