Private Alice Josephine Pool (Service No:Sf84173) enlisted in the Australian Womens' Service (AWAS) on 23 October 1942, and was transferred to 58 Anti Aircraft Search Light Battery on 23 November 1942 - graded Engine Hand. Gunner Pool served with 66 Mobile Search Light Battery, and was attached to 58 Anti Aircraft Search Light Battery at Discharge on 14 February 1945.

Josie was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1922, eldest of four children of Antonio (Anthony) Pool (b1888 in Andalusia, Spain) and Alice Grace Rogers (b1900 in Monmouthshire, Wales). Anthony and Alice married in 1920 in Cardiff, Wales, where Anthony was a Fitter and Turner. In 1922 they immigrated with their daughter and son, arriving in Adelaide on board the Baradine. Anthony and Alice settled at Lockleys via Hindmarsh, where they raised their family and Anthony worked as a Fitter and Turner and as a Mechanic.

Josie was working in Lockleys as a Tailoress in 1942 when she enlisted in the Army. In 1944 in Adelaide, Josie married Jack Thomas Smith (b1919 in Kensington, Victoria) - Jack was a Private in the Army (Service Nos:V214402/VX139096). Josie was Discharged in 1945 and Jack in 1946 - the couple settled in Kyabram in Victoria, where they raised their family and Jack was an Orchardist and later a Carpenter. Jack died in 1997 and Josie died in 2016.
