Joseph Tregilgas was aged nearly 43 when he enlsited at Adelaide.He was 5'7" (170cm) tall and weighed 135lbs (61kg), and had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and darkbrown hair. Joseph had married Elsie Sophia Maidment of the Elim Park property at Willunga in 1895. He left on 09 June 1916 to serve as a Wheelright Staff Sergeant with Army Service  Corps 3rd Divisional Train. However, in a letter dated 07 January 1918, he requested his return to South Australia and his discharge because of his age and health. He was also concerned about the state of his farm inlight of thedeath of one son Frank, and the enlistment of two others, Joseph Eric, and William. All of who are represented on the Willunga Cheer-up Collage. He returned on 16th April 1918.
