Mrs Mary Small (nee Fisher) was born in Adelaide on 16 January 1923. Born into a family of nine, Mary along with her sister Pat served in the Signals section of the Australian Women’s Army Service based at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide. The sisters underwent a signals training course with the 2nd Signals Training Battalion to become qualified Morse Code operators.
Affectionately known as the "AWAS Sisters" both Mary and Pat were extremely talented singers who would perform at wartime weddings and military events.
After the war Mary worked at The Advertiser and later in the drama department of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. On 20 May 1950 she married Keith James Small, a retired Royal Australian Air Force serviceman. The couple had four children: David, Louise, Philip and Joanne.
After the passing of her husband Mary became a resident at Resthaven Residential Care of South Australia.
Mary Small passed away on 22 February 2024 at the age of 101 years old. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
