Son of John Charles Zehnder and Marie Zehnder nee Prost of Nullagine, WA formerly of Fitzroy, Victoria.

Brother of Oscar Charles Zehnder MC who returned to Australia on 11 March 1919 having served with the Divisional Ammunition Column

Commenced return to Australia on 12 April 1919 aboard HT Suffolk disembarking on 5 June 1919

During 1923c Sydney married Inos Agnes Cuthbertson in Subiaco, WA
