Private Henry King Lewis (Service No:1351) enlisted in the AIF on 3 December 1914 and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Gallipoli on 15 February 1915 on board HMAT A50 Itonus. Evacuated from Malta to England suffering Dysentry, Private Lewis served on the Western Front with 12th Infantry Battalion, and was WiA (GSW thigh) in France on 10 August 1918. Private Lewis embarked from England for Adelaide on 14 December 1918 on board HT Burmah, and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 14 April 1919. In WWI, Private King (Service No:S56977) served with 4th Battalion VDC from 19 January 1942 to 7 August 1943. Son Kevin served in the Vietnam War.
Born at Port Broughton, South Australia in 1889, Harry was the only child of Thomas Edwin Lewis (b1857 in Adelaide, South Australia) and his first wife Mary Martha King (b1859 in Staffordshire, England). Thomas and Mary are believed to have married in 1883 at Port Broughton, where they raised their son and Thomas was a Mason. Following Mary's death in 1911, Thomas remarried.
Harry worked as Mason's Labourer in Port Broughton before enlisting in the Army in 1914 and, following his Discharge, married Eva Christina Ivy Blanche Morris (b1898 in Keith, South Australia) in 1919 at Port Lincoln, where they settled and raised their family. Harry worked as a Labourer and as a Railway Ganger at Port Lincoln and, in 1949, he and Eva divorced. In 1962 Harry was struck by a car as he was crossing the road, and died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
