Died on this date – 9th September……Private Leslie Aubrey Lee was born in 1893 at Germantown (Holbrook), New South Wales. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 18th July, 1916 as a 23 year old, single, Farm Labourer from Kinross, Holbrook, NSW.

Private Leslie Aubrey Lee embarked from Sydney on SS Port Napier on 17th November, 1916 with 14th Infantry Battalion, 22nd Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 29th January, 1917.

Private Lee was posted to 4th Training Battalion, Codford, Wiltshire on 30th January, 1917. He proceeded to France on 13th March, 1917 & joined 14th Battalion on 19th March, 1917.

Private Lee was sent to hospital on 30th March, 1917 & discharged to Base Details on 19th April, 1917. He rejoined his Battalion in France on 27th May, 1917.

Private Leslie Aubrey Lee was wounded in action on 13th August, 1917. He was admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance with gunshot wounds to back then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station. Pte Lee was admitted to 56th General Hospital at Etaples on 13th August, 1917. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Peter de Coninck on 15th August, 1917 with gunshot wounds to left shoulder & back.

Private Lee was admitted to East Sussex County Hospital, Hastings, Sussex, England on 15th August, 1917 with Transverse spinal lesion. The Hospital Admissions form states “Complete paraplegia below waist. Acute cystitis.”

Private Leslie Aubrey Lee died on morning of 9th September, 1917 at East Sussex County Hospital, Hastings, Sussex, England from wounds received in action in France – gunshot wound to back & Acute Cystitis following Paraplegia.

He was buried in Hastings Cemetery, Hastings, Sussex, England where 1 other WW1 Australian War Grave is located.
