Before being enlisted into the army, Courtney made a living off of being a typist. He was 18 years of age and without a partner. His place of birth was Burra, South Australia and lived in the address of Commercial Street, Kooringa, Burra, South Australia. Pearce served as part of the flying corps and a cadet in the army during World War One. He was embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board the HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25 March 1916.
