Biography

Ernest William Duffield is the third child of Richard George Duffield born 1848 Kelling England baptised 24 Febuary 1849 Kelling. Died 24th March 1935 Koolunga.

Ernest William was a family man and wrote home to his mother Sarah while in the AIF. His mother Sarah was his next of kin and was notified when he was wounded in action on the 6th June 1916. Ernest was transferred to England for convalescence. During the years of war Ernest served in Rouelles France and returned to Australia on 21st June 1919. Ernest was issued with 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

On his return Ernest took up farming at Bugal Hut near Loxton on land that he purchased as a return soldier.

On the 10th Febuary 1939 Ernest married Selina Dora Auricht at St Peters Lutheran Church Loxton. On the 8th October 1943 Ernest and Selina were blessed with a son Ian Ernest. In 1950 Ernest and Selina retired to Allenby Gardens On the 27th 0f May 1965 Earnt passed away with his loving family with him. His Son Ian Married Judith Cullen and had his two grand children Helen and Christopher Duffield unfortunatly he never met his grand children. Ernest was a quiet man and never spoke to his family about his service to the country so they are unaware of anything he did while he served.

Ernest was a proud man and never accepted any remuneration from the government for his service for the empire as he quoted "I fought to save the country not drain the country"
