West Adelaide Football Club involvement:
George played 42 games for WAFC from 1911 to 1913 and was a member of the 1912 Premiership team. He made his debut on 8 May 1911. The WAFC Annual reports state that he was recruited in 1911 and noted for his sound defensive play, which was also acknowledged in the 1912 report. George played 8 State games from 1911 to 1913.
Biographical details:
George was the son of Alexander Andrew Stewart Oakley and Frances Dridan. George was appointed Gunner with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade on 12 February 1916 and with his unit left from Melbourne on board HMAT A7 Medic on 20 May 1916. They were sent from England to France on 30 October 1916. George was wounded in action at Ypres, Belgium, on 14 October 1917, being shot in the left hand and right leg. His father was advised of the incident by Army Base Records in Melbourne on 14 November. He was able to rejoin his unit in France on 1 November. George was wounded on a second occasion on 4 April 1918, being shot in the right thigh. His father was advised on 16 April. After receiving treatment in hospital on 6 April, he was invalided to England where he was admitted to Colchester Hospital on 11 April. As a result of his injuries, George was returned to Australia on the Karoola on 23 July and was discharged on 21 November 1918. He died on 8 February 1970.
