The son of Mr James Donner Rhodes and Matilda Rhodes of One Tree Farm, Whitton, New South Wales.
James was wounded during the German attacks on Lagnicourt on the 15 April 1917. He died of multiple gunshot wounds in the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station three days later.
His brother 2230 Pte John Henry Rhodes, 53rd Battalion AIF, returned to Australia, 19 February 1919.
His sister, Martha Agnes Rhodes, who was deaf and dependant upon James's pay throughout the war was awarded a pension of 11 shillings and sixpence per fortnight from 5 July 1917.
