Private Alberte Dernacourte Sara (Service No:S24464) served in the ACMF with 43 Battalion from 22 April 1941 to 15 June 1942. Older brother Angus Reginald also served in WWII, and uncle Angus Archibald McDonald was KiA at Dernancourt in France in 1918.
Derna was born in Salisbury, Adelaide, South Australia in 1921, fourth of six children of Reginald (Reg) John Valentine Sara (b1889 in adelaide, South Australia) and Euphemia (Effie) Lilly Ferguson (nee McDonald; b1889 at Port Adelaide, South Australia). Reg (a Clerk) and Effie (a Widow with two small daughters) married in 1912 at Port Pirie and in 1915 were in Melbourne, where Reg was working as a Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF briefly (a couple of weeks). By 1917 Reg and Effie had returned to Adelaide, where they raised their family and Reg worked as a Clerk, Lift Attendant and Storeman. Reg was also a Songwriter and Musician - with his brother Henry, he wrote the words and musical score for 'My Own Dear Native Land'.
Derna was working as a Labourer in Ethelton in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF. In the early 1960s in Adelaide, Derna married Ivy Dorothy Clark (nee Howett; b1926 in Sandwell, South Australia). Derna and Ivy settled in Adelaide, where Ivy died in 1989 and Derna in 1995.
