David Charles Henry Searle was born 24th November 1901 to parents, James and Elizabeth Searle at Crystal Brook, South Australia. He spent his early childhood there, attending the Crystal Brook Primary School. During his late teens and early twenties he developed a keen interest in sporting activities, playing football for the Ramblers at Port Pirie. He met and married his Annie Elizabeth Laurel Cocks at Port Pirie on 27th August 1935, they then went on to purchase a home in Prince Street, Solomontown, Port Pirie. He was employed with the BHAS in Port Pirie prior to enlisting with the Military Services.
He enlisted in the Australian Army at Warradale, SA on the 3rd September 1941 where he served as a sergeant in the 43rd Infantry Battalion. He served in Darwin through 9 air raids where he was seriously wounded. Unable to continue serving his country due to his injuries, he was medically discharged on the 11th February 1943.
After being discharged he returned to his home in Port Pirie with his wife, children and grandchildren until his death in 1968.
I fondly remember the times as a young child when I had the opportunity to spend time with my Grandfather, when he would sit on the seat out on front verandah in the warmth of the sun listening to the wireless while I played hairdresser.
A loving and gentle soul that will always be remembered!
