Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of six siblings (Adrian, Mercia, Ross, Clive, Joan and Gloria) who served in WWII, Gunner Raymond William Ross Thomas (Service No:S12068) served in the ACMF with 13th Field Regiment from 3 Jan 1940 to 25 December 1941 (Occupational Reasons for Discharge).

Ross was born in Glenelg, South Australia in 1918, fourth of seven children of Henry (George) Thomas (b1888 in Woollahra, New South Wales) and Harriet (Rose) Butler (b1891 in Glenelg, South Australia). In 1907 George was Reported as Missing from home, and he and Rose married in 1914 in Glenelg, where they raised their family - six of their seven children served in WWII. George was a Labourer, Distiller and Tomato Grower.

Ross was working as a Dairyman on the family property in Glenelg in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF. Following his Discharge in 1941 for Occupational Reasons, Ross returned to Glenelg and work as a Dairyman. In 1966 in Adelaide he married Winifred Grace Mitchell (b1940 in London, England) - Winifred had immigrated with her family in 1952, arriving in Adelaide on board the Strathaven. Ross died in 1982 and Winifred in 1998.
