Julius Otto Andrew Thiele was born in Hahndorf in the Adelaide hills in 1912. His Parents were Johann Oswald and Auguste Bertha (nee Liebelt). Julius's grandfather Samuel Thiele,was one of the original German settlers of Hahndorf,escaping religeous persecution in Prussia he arrived aboard the Zebra in 1839.

Julius was 28 years old and working as a box sawyer for a Balhannah timbermill when he first enlisted in the CMF,later the second AIF.He was a Gunner in the 13th Field Regiment (see link). He trained at Oakbank before departing Sydney for Port Moresby. During his time in New Guinea his unit was involved in the battle of Buna/ Guna. Later in July 1942 he attended the ll Australian Division cooking course.

Embarking Port Moresby in October 1943 the regiment arrived back in Townsville where they undertook more training on the Atherton Tablelands.

Julius was transferred back to South Australia in June 1945 before being discharged in July. 
In 1969 at the age of 57 he married Ida Emma Vaughan (nee Kakoschke) at St. Pauls Church Hahndorf.

In a letter dated 25th May 1987 Julius applied to have his war medals sent to him. He had served one thousand two hundred and ninety six days in the army which included 625 days active service in Australia and 624 days outside Australia.

On 16/9/87 whilst residing at 100 Main St. Hahndorf he received the 1939/45 Star, The Pacific Star, The War Medal, and the A.S.M.
