"PERSONAL.
It is with profound regret that we announce that 2nd Lieut. Lewis Klug, M.M., has been killed in action in France. The ill-news came to hand early in the week, Mr and Mrs Klug having been officially intimated that Lewis had been killed on Aug. 9th. The young soldier left Queenscliff about two and a-half years ago, and proceeded to France about six months afterwards, where he gained the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery. He was afterwards transferred to a Military Instruction School in England, where he prepared himself as an officer. As a lad he attended the State School and afterwards the Geelong Grammar School. For some time he was in Queensland, acquiring knowledge of pastoral pursuit. Lewis was an expert at swimming, football and tennis, and a valued member of the local clubs. The deepest sympathy is expressed for ex-Cr. and Mrs Klug in their bereave- ment, and whose second son, Pte Cecil Klug, with the A.M.C., has just reached England." - from the Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, Portarlington, Sorrento Advertiser 24 Aug 1918 (nla.gov.au)
"LIEUTENANT LEWIS KLUG, M.M.
Lieutenant Lewis Klug has been killed in action in France. He was a native of Charlton, and a son of Mr. L. Klug, who at one time owned the East Charlton Hotel, but enlisted from Geelong. Lieut. Klug was a nephew of Mrs. Vantier, of the Bank of Australasia, Charlton. In March last he was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery." - from the Bendigonian 29 Aug 1918 (nla.gov.au)
