On May 9th, 1899, Norman Venning was born near Wilmington, South Australia which was his hometown. His father was William Venning and his mother is not known. Not much is known about his childhood but at some point, he moved to Pinnaroo. For his work career, he was a farmer.
When war broke out in 1914, he did not join straight away because he was too young but on February 15th, 1918, he enlisted. When he enlisted, his measurements such as height and weight were taken. His enlistment papers described him as five feet and ten inches tall, weighing seventy-three kilograms. His religion was Methodist.
He was put into the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. On June 10th, 1918, he embarked on the ship, HMAT A18 Wiltshire. He disembarked at the Suez Canal in Egypt on July 17th, at Moascar camp. He then traveled to Port Said and arrived on August 31st. On September 11th, he returned to Moascar camp. He did make to his unit, but on the day the war finally finished - 11 November 1918.
On July 12th, 1919 he was discharged but when World War Two started he enlisted for that.
At the age of twenty-one he married Annetta Lois Jenner, who was twenty-six at the time. They married on February 23rd, 1921 at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in the Naracoorte district.
