Francis was married with 11 children and resided at 23 Salter Street, Kensington.  Two of his sons Richard J and Henry S TOOGOOD were in the AIF.  He followed sport and spent most of his life until he enlisted farming on the West Coast of South Australia, mostly at Chilpieddie.  He joined the Garrison Battalion at Streaky Bay, and was stationed at Keswick.  In June 1942 while on leave he died suddenly at his home in Kensington.

DEATH OF MR. HERDE IN ADELAIDE
The death of Mr. F. E. D. Herde occurred at his home in Kensington last Saturday. He was 51 years of age. Mr. Herde left Streaky Bay last year to join the Garrison Battalion. He had lived for the most part of his life on the West Coast, having been employed for about 30 years by the Mudge family at  Bembutta and Myrtle Rocks. A man of great physique, it was stated that he died in his sleep. He leaves a wife and eleven children.
