Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

In Three Wars
PROBABLY the youngest Boer War veteran in the Anzac Day march was Mr. Jim Stubbs, 61, of Adelaide. He paraded with the 3rd Field Ambulance — the unit in which he served in World War I. Mr. Stubbs was only 15 when he went to the Boer War as a member of the British Army. He had spent two years at sea before that. In World War I he landed on Gallipoli as regimental sergeant major of the Third Field Ambulance, and saw that bitter cam paign through to the finish. One of his strefcher bearers was Jack Simpson, the immortal Manwith the Donkey. Mr. Stubbs still has pictures of Simpson with his donkeys Murphy and Jenny, and their daughter Jenny, and of Simpson's grave.
Mr. Stubbs won a commission and a mention in despatches with the First A.I.F. Before he was called up from the officers' reserve for emergency duty early in the Second World War, Mr. Stubbs was a grandstand bookmaker. He owned several good horses, including Rusticiana, winner of a Harry D. Young Hurdle, and Grand National Steeple. Starala and Detachi also won races for him.
