The son of William Charles and Emma Jane Schimlick, Charles had two brothers and two sisters. His sister died in Bairnsdale during 1914, from tuberculosis.

Charles was posted missing, 19 July 1916. At a Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, he was pronounced as 'killed in action, 19 July 1916'.

Standard handwritten note in his service file says: 'Presumed Buried In No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'.

His brother, 2759 Pte. William Schimlick 29th Battalion AIF, was also killed in action on the 23 March 1917, also no known grave, aged 23.
