Trooper William Sloyle (correct spelling is Stoyel) Nelson (Service No:964) enlisted in the AIF on 14 January 1915 as a Private attached to 3rd Double Squadron. He was attached to 10th Light Horse Regiment on 26 April 1915 when he embarked from Fremantle for Gallipoli on board  HMAT A20 Hororata. Trooper Nelson was hospitalised on several occasions in Egypt - Influenza, Mumps and Hepatitis. He embarked from Suez on 2 September 1916 on board HT Ascanius bound for Melbourne and was Discharged on 18 December 1916.

Born in 1890 in Brisbane QLD, William was the second of twelve children of Alfred Nelson (b1864 in Roxburghshire, Scotland) and Amy Kate Stoyel (b1871 in Devon, England). Alfred was a Coach Body Maker in Scotland when he immigrated to Brisbane in 1884, and Amy immigrated in 1889, arriving in Brisbane on board the Merkara. Alfred (a Coach Builder) and Amy married in Brisbane in 1890 and by 1892 had moved to Victoria where they lived in Melbourne and at the El Dorado Mines. By 1895 Alfred and Amy moved their family to Midland Junction in WA where Alfred worked as a Coach Builder and Carpenter. Amy and the children settled in Leederville, Perth while Alfred worked in the country, including Lennonville, Mt Magnet WA.

William was a Farmer in Leederville, Perth prior to enlistment in WWI and was a Labourer in Fremantle WA following his Discharge. William moved to Beverley WA and was a Timber Worker and Mill Hand at the Kauri Mills in 1922 when he married Ethel Rose Waddingham (b1900 at Balingup, WA) in Balingup WA. William and Ethel settled at 88 Mile nr Beverley WA where William was a Timber Worker until the early 1930s when he took up land at the Nannup Settlement at Carlotta Brook, Nannup where he was a Settler/Farmer. William died in 1938 and Ethel later relocated to Northam and then Perth where she died in 1968.
