Son of Maurice O'Connell of Charleville, County Cork, Ireland later changed to Sgt. Major Patrick Hogan of Cootamundra when his father could not be located.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 October 1917 aboard HT Port Lyttleton disembarking on 16 December 1917
