Private Hubert Henry Atwell (Service No:SX38744) initially served in the ACMF (Service No:S115161) with 2 ART Battalion and was attached to 2 Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) Training Battalion when he Discharged on 13 April 1945 to enlist in the AIF. Private Atwell served with 15th Field Ambulance in New Guinea (embarking from Townsville for Torokina on board the SS Ormiston, from Torokina to Rabaul on board the Kanimbla and returning to Sydney on board the Manunda on 21 June 1946. Private Atwell was attached to 15 Field Ambulance at Discharge on 26 November 1946.

Henry was born at Port Pirie, South Australia in 1921, third of eight children of Hubert Henry Atwell Snr (b1890 in Moonta, South Australia) and Flora Webber (b1892 in Waterloo, NSW). Hubert was Clerk with the SA Railways in 1917 when he and Flora married in Port Pirie. Hubert had enlisted twice (1915 and 196) for service in WWI and was Discharged within a few weeks as medically unfit on both occasions. Hubert and Flora settled in Port Pirie where they raised their family and Hubert worked for SA Railways and was elected to Council - as a Councillor and Alderman - and served on the Council of Port Pirie Technical School.

Henry was an Apprentice Moulder in Port Pirie when he enlisted in the ACMF. Following his Discharge he was a Manager in Canberra, ACT before returning to Port Pirie where he died in 2004.
