Private Lyell Nicholas (Service No:SX38005) initially served with the ACMF (Private: Service No:S112364) from 16 February 1943 to 24 May 1943 and was attached to 2nd Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) Training Battalion when he enlisted in the AIF on 25 May 1943. Transferred to 2nd/2nd Field Ambulance on 4 March 1944, Private Nicholas embarked from Cairns for Aitape on 19 December 1944 on board the Evangeline. He was attached to 4th Infantry Battalion (16 February 1946) and embarked from Wewak for Sydney on board the Duntroon on 1 March 1946. Private Nicholas was attached to 2nd/2nd Field Ambulance at Discharge on 12 February 1947.

The only child of Grace Nicholas (b1898 in Melbourne, Victoria), Lyell was born in 1924 in Adelaide, South Australia. Grace worked as a Nurse in Ballarat prior to Lyell's birth and then lived in Kaniva and Melbourne where she worked as an Attendant with the Children's Welfare Department.

Lyell was a Shop Assistant in Adelaide, South Australia prior to enlistment in the Army and was in Melbounre in 1946 when he married Esther Mary Good (b1925 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following his Discharge in 1947, Lyell and Esther settled in Melbourne where Lyell worked as a Grocer and Salesman. Lyell died in 2008.
