Corporal Jeffrey Charles Hoile (1925–1985)
Jeffrey Charles Hoile was born on 26 March 1925 at Yorketown, South Australia, the son of Ernest Robert Hoile and Alberta Irene (Franke) Hoile. He grew up on southern Yorke Peninsula, where his family was closely associated with Inneston, a small settlement centred on the area's gypsum and salt industries.
As a young man Jeffrey worked as a salt hand at Inneston before entering military service during the Second World War.
On 8 March 1945, he enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces at Wayville, South Australia, under service number S115776. His attestation recorded that he was nineteen years old, single, of the Methodist faith, and nominated his father, Ernest Robert Hoile of Inneston, as his next of kin. He was described as having fair hair, blue eyes and standing approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall.
On 31 July 1945, Jeffrey transferred to the Australian Imperial Force at Cowra, New South Wales, where he was allotted service number SX37399. His service record again recorded his birthplace as Yorketown and confirmed Ernest Hoile as his next of kin.
Jeffrey served throughout the closing months of the war and the immediate post-war occupation period. His military service was entirely within Australia, where he served with training and ordnance units. He attained the rank of Corporal before being discharged on 13 December 1946. His service is commemorated on the Warooka District World War II Honour Board.
Following his military service, Jeffrey married Daphne May (Hickman) Edwards, the widow of her first marriage to Colin William Edwards. Daphne brought her daughter, Jennifer Kaye Edwards (1941–2004), into the marriage, and Jeffrey became Jennifer's stepfather.
Jeffrey and Daphne made their home in Adelaide. At the time of his death they were living at 3/30 Fuller Street, Walkerville.
Jeffrey died at his Walkerville home on 14 July 1985, aged 60 years. His death registration records him as a married man, with Daphne May Hoile as his surviving spouse.
He was cremated and his ashes were interred at Enfield Memorial Park, Eastern Niche Wall No. 2, Wall & Row DT, Site No. 28.
