Son of Mrs Elsie Lottie WALLADGE of Koolunga, SA.  Educated at Lake View SA, he was interested in all outdoor sport.  A farm labourer in civilian life he had three brothers that were in the 2nd AIF.  He volunteered for service in the AMF in June 1940, and went with the 9/23rd Light Horse and then with the 9th Australian Motor Regiment.
