Oldest of three sons who enlisted
Walter Vincent Leslie Harradine
Walter was the oldest son of Vincent and Ruby Harradine’s three boys who enlisted and was one of nine children. He was born on 9th August 1909. His siblings were Vincent, Doris, Frederick, Ernest, Lorna, Norman, Alan and Jean. The three young men, Fred, Alan and Walter were all involved in the Australian Military Forces with Wal being Private SN S51112 in the 2/10th Infantry. His youngest brother, Alan was first to enlist in March 1941, then Wal enlisted just over two years later aged 33 in Woodford, Queensland. He was allocated an South Australian number, SX31379.
He and the extended family were grief-striken at the death of Wal’s young seven-year-old niece, Gwenneth in 1942. Each year he posted a tribute to her in the local Advertiser: 1943 HARRADINE. —Loving memories of Gwennie, passed away Oct 23, 1942. Your happy little face and dear little ways will live In my heart till the end of my days. —Sadly missed by Uncle Wal (A.I.F., Australia). Similarly, in 1944: HARRADlNE. —Cherished memories of dear little Gwennie, passed away Oct. 23, 1942. A sweet little girl, now laid to rest, How dear she was God knoweth best. — Sadly missed by Uncle Wal (A.I.F., Australia).
He and brother Alan were both discharged on the 26th November 1945. Their other sibling, Fred was the last to be discharged in January of 1946.
Walter died on 31st August 1981, just after his 81st birthday, and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery, as were his two other serving brothers and his parents.
