104 years ago today, on the 23rd March 1917, Private Arthur John (Jack) Burns, 30th Battalion (Reg No-621), Head Office Clerk (Worked for Castlemaine Brewery & Wood Brothers & Company, Bolton Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.), of "Alheera", 20 Myola Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, fell at Bapaume, France, age 22.
Born at Camden Haven, New South Wales on the 11th August 1894 to Francis Henry (died 1910 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article133906500) and Harriett Burns, Jack enlisted July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW left arm or hand, slight, Battle of Fromelles), Jack’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.
His name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, St. Peter's Church Memorial Trees, Book of Gold, Waratah Park Memorial Gates, Mayfield Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Mayfield Public School Honour Roll (photo, unveiled on the 19th October 1918, 79 names inscribed, 11 Fallen) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies on the Memorial Plaque at his parent’s gravesite in remembrance of Jack’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. ANGLICAN 1-45. 86.
