Youngest of the four brothers (Richard, Ronald, Lenard and Albert) who served in WWII, Private Albert Oswald Bayly (Service Nos:S53601/SX29572) initially served in the ACMF with 26 Salvage Section from 23 June 1942, transferring to the AIF on 3 May 1943. Private Bayly served in New Guinea with 5 Division Salvage Unit (11 June 1943 - 6 February 1945), and was attached to 26 L of C Salvage Section at Discharge on 1 May 1945, (Medically Unfit). Two of his brothers (Ricard and Lenard) served with 9th Division Ammunition Sub Park, and both were PoWs held by the Japanese in Malaya.
Youngest of four brothers, Bert was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1920 to William Robert Bayly (b1887 in Yelta via Moonta, South Australia) and Myrtle Edith Briggs (b1882 in Inkerman, South Australia). William (a Teacher in Adelaide) and Myrtle married in Prospect in 1910, and lived in Nailsworth before moving to Broken Hill in New South Wales. William worked in Broken Hill as a Contractor and Salvage Salesman (Wiehert & Bayly), returning to South Australia in the early 1920s. William and Myrtle settled at Two Wells via Wakefield, where William worked as a Mason. All four of their sons served in WWII.
Bert was working as a Labourer in Minlaten in 1939 when he married Eileen Mary McKenzie (b1922 in Minlaten, South Australia). Following his Discharge from the Army, Bert and Eilleen lived in Gawler, Yorketown and Adelaide, where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Labourer and Painter. Bert died in 2000 and Eileen died in 2002.
