Jack's apprentice
Just prior to moving the bakery business to Farrell’s Flat Jack made the decision to take on an apprentice baker.
The boy chosen, Clarence John “Sandy” Millard had just left school at the age of 14 and was the son of Clarence and Dulcie Millard. Sadly Dulcie had passed away when John was five years old. His father remarried and he and his wife Stella lived in a railway cottage on John Street, Manoora—the same street as Jack’s bakery. Clarence senior was employed by the South Australian Railways.
When Jack and Eileen moved the bakery business to Farrell’s Flat in 1938 young John Millard continued his apprenticeship there. John would have been a fully fledged baker when World War 2 broke out in 1942.
John enlisted on 10 April 1943 and eventually served in New Guinea with 45 Australian Field Baking Platoon. He returned to Manoora on leave near the end of his service just as Clarence was transferred to Merriton. John returned to Queensland to marry Patricia Brophy. Several years later he found employment as a baker at Port Pirie before transferring to the lead smelters.
