Biography

Horace Hilton THOROUGHGOOD was born in 1886 in Blayney, NSW

His parents were Henry THOROUGHGOOD and Hannah LATIMER

Horace married Gertrude Elsie SMITH in 1907 (NSW) - they had 4 children - Harold b 1907, Ronald William b. 1909, Neville b. 1912, Jean b. 1914

He had previous service for 6 months as a Concentration Camp Guard before he enlisted on 2nd December, 1914 with the Australian Army - he was with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd reinforcements - Unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Seong Choon on 11th February, 1915 - he was wounded & invalided home & returned to Australia on the Troopship 'Marshall 'on 19th August, 1916 and was discharged on 18th October, 1916

Horace re-enlisted on 12th February, 1917 with the 1st Pioneers

He was Killed in Action on 25th August, 1918 - he commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial & the Australian Memorial - he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal  & the Victory Medal

THOROUGHGOOD.- In loving memory of my dear son, Private Horace Thoroughgood (Anzac) killed in action in France on August 25, 1918.

"This day brings back to memory fresh, Our loved one gone to rest

And those who miss him most of all, Are those who loved him best

How joyful is the thought that lingers, when loved ones cross deaths sea

That when our labours here are ended, with them we'll ever be"

Cumberland Argus & Fruit Growers Advocate - 12th June 1915

Private Horace Hilton Thoroughgood a well known and much loved resident of Auburn who was among the early lot of soldiers to go to the front has been wounded at the Dardanelles.  He is 27 years of age and has a wife and four young children.  His mother is also a respected resident of Auburun, her place of abode being at Mary St & Cumberland Road.

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD - 11th November, 1918

Mrs. Thoroughgood of Mary St Auburn as received news that her son Private  Horace Thoroughgood has been Killed in France.  He had been wounded at Gallipoli and was invalided home & discharged.  When he recovered he enlisted again and returned to the front in June 1917.

Received great news today (20/1/2023), that the case by Fallen Diggers researcher Andrew moon put together has been successful. No longer missing is Sapper Horace Hilton Thoroughgood 4194 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion. Horace was buried in Heath Cemetery as an unknown Australian from the 1st Pioneer Battalion. In the near future Plot V.I.11 will read his name.
