Patrick was educated at St. Mary's and Marist Brothers' School Norwood and at 18 years of age went into camp with the Militia Forces in January 1942.  He had been employed at W.H. Thamm's Wickerworks prior to this and was fond of all sport.  He was in camp at Woodside and Springbank.
