Son of Pte. Joseph Bernard and Gladys Lenora Giblin of Marchant Street, Kensington, SA. Educated at Marist Brother's College Norwood, Frederick was quiet and reserved and very keen on reading. In civilian life he worked at Metters Foundry for some time, then at a Munitions Factory in Islington where he left and joined the AIF in February 1942.
