Youngest of two children, Fred was born in Highgate, South Australia in 1921 to John Charles Frederick Newman (b1869 in Adelaide, South Australia) and his second wife Amy Marion Bing (b1889 in Adelaide, South Australia). John had worked as a Gardener, and was a Greengrocer in 1918 when he and Amy married in Goodwood. John and Amy settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and John was a Greengrocer.
