My Great Uncle Alfred

Hi,
Alfred was the brother of my grandfather William Preston Davis. He was the oldest of 5 boys (one died young) born to Eliza Preston and John Davis.

Alfred was born in Worcestershire England in a small village called Claines. His father John Davis was baptised in Dormston, Wor, 17 DEC 1856. He died on William's 6th birthday, 13 April 1890, after suffering from pneumonia for 8 days after being hit by a carriage, they were living in Spellis Green, Worcestershire, England.
Alfred had a brother George who also served in the war. George was born in Tibberton and baptised 11 May 1886 he died 24 March 1972 in Ironbridge Salop, England. George was in India in 1913 and injured his arm. His battalion went to Gallipoli and landed April 25 and 26 1915, the same time that Alfred landed at Anzac Cove and was killed.
We don't have a photo of Alfred. We do have photos of George in India dressed in his uniform, and a 1913 photo book from Bareilly India.

Biography

Precious little is known about Private Alfred Davis, regimental number 590, 10th Battalion, D Company.

Born in England at Claines near Worcester circa April 1882 he was baptised on 18th April 1882.

Whilst in England he served as a Military Telegraphist for 13 years with the Oxford Light Infantry.

It is unknown when and for what reason he immigrated to Australia but it is suggested that he landed at Melbourne.

Alfred Davis enlisted on 21 August 1914 and was placed in C Company of the 10th Battalion. He stated his occupation was still as a Telegraphist (whilst he mother in England said it was a painter) and that he was living in Petersburg now Peterborough.

He embarked for overseas service with the 10th Battalion on the 20th of October 1914 on HMAT Ascanius (A11).

After arriving in Egypt the 10th Battalion underwent and restructuring process and Alfred Davis was transferred to D Company of the 10th Battalion.

On the first day of the Gallipoli landing, 25th April 1915, Private Alfred Davis was killed in Action. He is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial to the Missing.

His brother, 10521 Private G Davis was serving with the 4th Worcester Regiment in Burma before World War One broke out. It is unknown if the served in World War One.
