He was subsequently discharged, possibly on 31 August 1914. At the time he was a student at Gatton Agricultural College, Gatton, Qld., and with several other youths, enlisted in the 9th Battalion. His father, Dr. T. H. May, of Bundaberg, applied to the Army Authority for the release of his son, owing to his youth and a spinal condition, which could be aggravated by strenuous active service. Release was then made. However, upon turning 21, he again tried to enlist, and after being turned down, eventually enlisted with the 12 Light Horse.

War Service/Promotions: He transferred to Mashobra in Bombay, India, on 18 March 1917. Disembarked Suez, Egypt, on 4 April 1917 and marched into 4th Light Horse Training Regiment on 6/7 May 1917. Taken on Strength ex 4th Light Horse Training Regiment, 11 July 1917, then transferred from 4th Light Horse Training Regiment to 2nd and 4th Camel Regiment, allotted to 12th Light Horse Regiment. Hospitalised on 7 November 1918, and rejoined unit on 8 November, then hospitalised again on 21 November 1918. On the 1 February 1919 he was attached for duty to Australian Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. On 29 April 1919 to be Temporary Corporal. On 22 June 1919, approval for non military employment in United Kingdom. Discharged 20 October 1919.
Fate: Returned to Australia per HT Delta, 2 August 1919. He married Louisa Maude Burkitt, 24 March 1921, St Stephens Presbyterian Church, Phillip Street, Sydney, NSW.
