Alfred George (George) Galliford was born in Bowden, SA on 29th June 1917 to Alfred and Clarice Galliford (nee Skewes). He attended Brompton primary school and after leaving school at age 13, having attained the Q.C. certificate, spent the depression years as a factory hand and later welder. In 1940 he joined the household staff at Government House in Adelaide. He was called up for national service and joined the militia in February, 1941 and later joined the 2/27 Battalion. In September 1941 he married Freda Shipton and they had 1 son who was born in 1947.
During the war years he served in the 2/27 S.A. Scottish regiment and saw service in Darwin, Townsville, Atherton Tablelands, Lae (new Guinea), Green Island, and Bouganville. From 1942 he held the rank of Corporal, and during much of his service he volunteered as an assistant to the Salvation Army in the Red Shield Hut.
After his discharge from the army, he spent a few years as a bus conductor and the rest of his working life he was employed as a storeman in the oil industry. George died at age 71 on the 4th July 1988 at the Repatriation General Hospital at Daw Park in Adelaide, after several years suffering from heart disease. He is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena with his wife Freda.
