Sergeant John Henry Mitchell (Service Nos:S213187/SX25949) initially served in the ACMF as a Private attached to 27 Infantry Battalion (SASR) from 22 April 1940 to 14 June 1942, before enlisting in the AIF on 15 June 1942. Sergeant Mitchell served with 108 Anti Tank Regiment, 29 Anti Tank Battery, 2/5 Armoured Regiment and 112 Tank Attack Regiment, and was attached to Australian Training Centre (JW) at Discharge on 8 November 1945. On 11 August 1949, Sergeant Mitchell (108 Anti Tank Regiment) was awarded the Australian Efficiency Medal (Trove).

John was born in Goodwood, Adelaide, South Australia in 1918, eldest of three children of John (Jack) Henry Park Mitchell (b1896 in Solomontown, South Australia) and Annie Alberton Newman (b1895 in Borken Hill, NSW). Jack and Annie married in 1917 in Adelaide, where they settled and raised their family and Jack worked as a Labourer, Driver and Carrier.

John worked as a Clerk and was a Postmaster in Adelaide in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1942 in Adelaide, John married Ellen (Nell) Margaret Morrissey (b1918 in Adelaide, South Australia). Following his Discharge from the Army, John and Nell settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and John was a Teacher. Nell died in 1997 and John in 2005.
