Son of John Thomas Owen and Annie N. Owen of Myra Street, Hamilton, Newcastle, NSW.

Prior to enlisting Edward had served with the NSW Police having transferred from the Australian Garrison Artillery having served there for about three years.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 January 1919 aboard HT City of Exeter disembarking on 2 March 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
