Robert was born to John Priest (1851-1899) and Eliza EVANS (1853-1922) nee BURNARD at Thebarton on 27.09.1886.

He was a fruit grower after the war and also worked at Renmano wines in Renmark.

He married Emily Sarah ANDERSEN (1886-1979) at Renmark on 16.05.1929. There were 2 children to the marriage.

Robert died at Renmark on 27.06.1973 at the age of 86 and is commemorated on Renmark’s World War 1 Honour Roll in the Soldier’s Memorial Hall. His wife Emily died in 1979 and was buried in the same grave.

Military 

Robert Stodden EVANS enlisted in the AIF on 21 January 1916 and was originally given service number 29876. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant and embarked from Melbourne on 3 October 1916 with the 120th Howitzer Battery. He arrived in England on 19 November 1916. He embarked for France arriving on 8 January 1917 and joined the 14th Field Artillery Brigade and posted to the 114th Howitzer Battery at Buire, France. He transferred to the HQ 5th Australian Divisional Artillery on 4 September 1917. He re-joined the 14th Field Artillery Brigade on 25 January 1918. Sgt EVANS was involved in the advance to the Hindenburg Line, the second battle of Bullecourt and the battle of Passchendaele in 1917 and the German spring offensive in 1918.

On 20 April 1918, he was sent to England to undergo officer training and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant shortly after the war ended. He returned to Australia on 27 May 1919 and was discharged from the army on 5 July 1919. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
